How to Handle a Technical Failure During a Live Set

Every DJ will face it eventually: a deck freezes, the sound cuts, the laptop crashes. When you DJ on a regular basis, by the law of averages something will go wrong along the way. What separates a professional from an amateur isn't whether it happens, it's how they respond.

Stay Calm First, Troubleshoot Second

Staying as composed as you can is foundational. Creative thinking and problem solving are impaired when you're stressed, your focus narrows and your decision making capacity diminishes.

Before reacting, identify whether it's a hardware malfunction, a software crash, or an audio issue, rushing to a solution without proper assessment can make things worse.

The Standard Fixes

If a deck stops working, switch to the other one while troubleshooting. If the booth monitor dies, mix in your headphones only until the issue gets sorted. If the entire system cuts out, check the mixer output, power supply, and cables, most of the time the problem is something obvious and fixable.

For CDJ users specifically, always carry at least two identical USB sticks, if one fails, mix out of the malfunctioning CDJ using the backup so the music never stops.

Build Redundancy Before You Even Arrive

Carry a backup USB stick in case your laptop or controller fails, pack spare cables and power adapters, and do a soundcheck before the gig to identify potential issues with the venue's sound system.

Communicate, Don't Disappear

If you can't fix it yourself, being able to explain the issue to technical staff can get it fixed quickly, if there's no sound engineer on hand, venue management or the promoter is who you should be communicating with.

And don't go silent on the crowd. Audiences understand that technical issues happen, but you need to engage with them. The mark of the greatest DJs is their ability to keep energy and momentum up even while addressing problems on stage.

Many legendary DJs have turned tech mishaps into iconic moments, using a microphone to engage the crowd, or transitioning to a lower-energy vibe temporarily while the main gear comes back online.
